Grace

I like my day job. I do. Some days less than others, but who couldn’t say that?

One of the things I like about my day job is that even though I work in the software industry, it runs its releases like a machine. There are only three crunch times throughout the year. They’re the same three months every year, so I can plan for them.

Then this thing called life happens and screws up my plans.

Right now I’m really pushing to finish the novel rewrites. I’ve been reading chapters out loud in the morning, then incorporating those changes in the evenings. This means between 3-4 hours of writing per day, on top of 60 hours of work per week for the day job.

It’s only for 30 days. I think I can maintain this pace. I’m very tired, and I’m hoping to make up at least some sleep this weekend.

The real question is, can I do it with joy, without stressing out, without constantly complaining? That’s the real challenge. As well as staying healthy and fit through it all.

I’ve spent a lot of time the last few days thinking about how to do this with grace. I have some ideas, big and small — becoming hyper organized, getting a massage, paying for someone else to clean my place, buying really healthy food, walking daily, etc. What do you do during these crunch times?

  1. Wow, you’re being really proactive in thinking about how to handle it first. I usually stumble through it and then I’m surprised that I’m grumpy and eating poorly and reacting like a 3 yr old that’s missed her nap. But if I were planning well – get someone else to clean your house. Definitely. One less group of things to worry about that take up time. Oh, and you know, eat healthy. I fall down there a lot.
