Today I went on my second annual yarn buying spree, though I didn’t actually go to any yarn stores.
Value Village has a huge sale on President’s Day — half off all clothing. And as spring is just around the corner, they bring out all their sweaters and mark them down in price. Then you get to take half-off that price.
Last year I bought five sweaters that I took apart, frogged back into yarn, then made things out of it. I made a baby blanket, gloves, and a pair of sock/slippers. I still have yarn left over but I have plans for much of it.
This year, I limited myself again to five sweaters. I mainly focused on yarn content, and I think I got a couple of real bargains, as well as some amazing yarn!

100% cotton orange, red and yellow sweater
This is actually a man’s large hoodie. This means a lot of yarn! I don’t like working with cotton yarn, but I couldn’t resist the colors of this. I think it would make an amazing scarf/glove/hat set. |

This is a close up to better show off the colors. |

Ice green wool, angora and cashmere sweater
I love the color of this sweater, though it’s difficult to get a good picture of it. It’s really soft though. A small. Not sure what I’d make out of it — socks, perhaps. |

It isn’t a sport yarn, but it isn’t heavy, either. I’d say on the medium to light end. Once I take it apart I’ll be better able to judge the ply. |

80% acrylic, 15% nylon, 5% wool beautiful ombre sweater
I try to not get acrylic sweaters, but I loved the colors of this. The nylon thread plied with the yarn give it a metallic sheen. Plus, it’s incredibly soft. |

Close up of the ombre. Can’t really see the nylon thread. I just love these colors. |
 |
75% silk, 25% cashmere sweater
I consider this one of my best finds for the day. I paid $1.50. Look again at the contents. This is going to make an incredible piece — I just don’t know what yet. It’s so soft. |

The yarn is three colors plied together — light blue, medium blue and dark blue. |
 |
70% Angora, 30% nylon
This sweater is actually a dark maroon color, but it’s difficult to get an accurate photo of it. It’s really soft, and very much an experiment. I’m uncertain if I’ll be able to take it apart or not. For $5, I’m willing to take a chance. |

Angora sweater close up
This is closer to the actual color — it’s a really dark red. |
Just a note about the wool/angora/cashmere… I’d try to think of something other than socks to make with it. I made slippers from a non-sock yarn, figuring it’d be fine, and I wore a hole through them in 3 weeks. It looks like it would make a pretty, lacy scarf, though.
Thanks for the tip! I don’t know what I’m going to make from it — but OMG is it beautiful and soft. It’s a 6-ply yarn, two threads of each color (light, medium and dark blue.)
Hilarious!
That orange/red sweater? Yeah I had one. I wore it for quite a while in highschool or was it college. Excellent choice.
