I’m both pleased and dissatisfied by the writing I did this morning. The prompt was “This is what women don’t know about love.” Then Mandy’s Magik shop showed up, just up the street and around the corner from Tomas the green grocer. It was therapy writing, and not a single thing from it could be mined or used for a public story, which is why I’m dissatisfied by it. I’m very pleased with it in some ways, though, because it had a very clever, unplanned ending. Plus, therapy writing can be very satisfying on a guttural level.
I picked up a copy of Fearless Creating, by Eric Maisel. I’ve been doing the writing prompts, which are very much for a beginner, and going through The Artist’s Way, which again, is more for a beginning artist. I’ve needed to relearn some of that beginning stuff, so they’ve both been very good for me, but I have to adapt some of the lessons to be more appropriate.
Now, I’ve only gone through the first chapter of Fearless Creating — but OMG. He seems to be speaking directly to me, to what I need to hear and do. He’s even using language that I’m very comfortable with, talking about process (anyone who knows me knows that I’m *all* about process.) I’m going to continue to use all three books for a while, see where it gets me. I actually started having novel thoughts again this morning, so I do feel as though I’m making progress.
I spent last night at Norwescon — boy, was that fun. I had a great time. I’m considering the whole weekend and the con to be my artist’s date for the week, talking with writers about writing, with artists about art, is very rejuvenating to me. I’m going to be doing both the Broad Universe rapid fire reading, as well as the Talebones Live reading. Other than that, you’ll probably find me in the bar. Hope to see you there!
I won’t be at Norwescon, but I’ll look into Fearless Creating. Sounds good!
Sorry not to see you there — it was a fun con for me. I’m going to do the next chapter of Fearless Creating tonight.
