Update

It appears that I’m still working on that thing that absorbed my brain.

I’ve finished the prologue and sent it out to people to read. I need to rewrite chapter one (it’s all typed in.) I’m about halfway finished with writing out chapter two by hand. I know the major event at the end of chapter three, as well as the first scene of chapter four. But really, that’s about it until the end.

I’m still resisting writing an outline. I don’t know if this is going to continue, mainly because I’m afraid that I’m not front loading the beginning chapters with all the stuff that they need to contain. But I’m so excited about this novel, and I love being able to capture the energy that I generally put into the outline into the real writing, as it were.

I’m so happy writing, right now. I’m still completely obsessed with it. Also — I’m writing what makes me happy. I worked on the prologue this morning instead of writing more on chapter two, doing what I wanted to do instead of what I thought I “should” do. I think that’s going to be the key — to write what I want to write, and to trust that I’ll get through the novel anyway. I don’t know if that means that I won’t write in order — if I’ll, say, write chapter three before I finish chapter two. I haven’t felt a drive to do that, but I have given myself permission to do that. And it’s all good.

So — how ya’ll doing?

  1. New comics day. 🙂 To each their own obsessions. Now I have to wait for everyone else to read these so I have someone to talk to. On the plus side, a friend is coming over tonight and I will stay up waaay too late doing lit-crit-style analysis of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for fun.

  2. I’m so happy that you are enjoying writing again! Really, I can’t see that it matters what order you write things in. One of my favorite features about computers is being able to rearrange paragraphs after I write them.

I have been enjoying spinning and knitting. I went to the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival last weekend and bought four pounds of Wensleydale wool (http://www.wensleydales.com/). I’ve been planning on getting this as a graduation present for myself since January 2005. I bought raw fleece because it is quite expensive after processing. More work, but if the fiber is good it is fun to work with. I just finished spinning 4 oz of tussah silk that I bought last spring. It feels really good to be finishing spinning bags of fiber. I kept buying stuff while I was in grad school, even though I didn’t have time to work with it.
Another fun thing I have been doing is reading novels. Fun stuff like Terry Prachett or things I pick up at the library. When I was in school I stuck with books by my friends, so I could be sure they would be good. Now I can afford to take chances again.
