Today I kind of went off the deep end. There are many pictures of pens under the cut. Plus, one of the most expensive pens I’ve ever seen — was $18,000, but now on sale for a mere $13,000! Mind you, it *is* beautiful and an amazing piece of artwork.
These are all Maki-e pens. The definition from the web site:
Maki-e was created by the Japanese around 1400 years ago. Maki-e is a unique art form of sowing gold powders on contour lines drawn with sticky Urushi lacquer to form elaborate designs. Countless combinations of techniques are used to achieve the contrast and balance of beauty.
| Koi I thought schnaucl would enjoy the koi! More about this pen here. |

| Peacock — full view, front Peacock by Danitrio. I think this pen is gorgeous. Particularly the details. More about this pen here. |

| Shuten Doji — collection of three to show full artwork Only 20 of these pens were made. Was originally $18,000, now on sale for a mere $13,000! They are amazing though. |
|
| Shuten-Doji, single pen You’ll find information about this pen here. |
|
| Shuten-Doji, detail The art work is 100% hand done with complicated Shishiai-Takamaki-e. Notice the eyes of the Demon are made of tiny pieces of egg shells and blue turban snail shells. The katana is again done with pieces of blue turban snail shells. Please see my attempt at collage photo bellow for detail. This is one of Japan’s most famous Oni tale. If you are tired of the mundane Maki-e of flowers and birds, here is your chance to own a big and bold Maki-e. This maki-e is not for the faint of heart! |
The legend behind the koi is even cooler: if a carp manages to swim up a waterfall, it becomes a dragon. Thus, this is a recurring theme on Japanese pens.
I’d heard that as well. It’s one of the reasons why I like the koi.
Awesome….
They are totally awesome!
Wow! *drool…* Those are stunning. 🙂
Aren’t they? I really liked them a lot. Remember that quill I was telling you about? It’s made by Fjader. I’ll do a post on it later.
There are some pens I just don’t feel I’m worthy to own, you know? That Oni pen is fabulous.
I understand. It’s the type of pen that I wouldn’t actually write with — I’d be too busy showing it to other people at the tea shop. If I’d ever take it out of my house. . .
