Am here in New Orleans to scout out neighborhoods, figure out where I’m going to live come September when I move here.
I ate dinner at The Alpine: a Louisiana Cajun Cafe. The food was amazing — fresh and perfectly seasoned.
The cafe itself was very interesting. The patrons included a tableful of nuns, dressed in white habits. They were celebrating, and ordered a creme brulee, which got flamed at the table. The waitress brought out this thing that looked like a large fire extinguisher that she used for flaming it. It was pretty amazing.
While I was walking home I passed through the courtyard in front of St. Louis Cathedral. It was full of fortune tellers, palm readers and tarot card readers. You know there’s novel details in that. There was even one guy who was doing requests — his instrument? A table full of glasses of water. He was rubbing the rims to sound notes. So very cool.
I took a few pictures tonight — they’re under the cut.
So how long are you here for?I didn’t realize that you won’t be moving here until September. If you’re still interested in swing dancing and if you’ll still be here on Sunday night we like to go to a place called d.b.a. which is in the 600 block of Frenchmen Street. One of the best bands in town, The Palmetto Bug Stompers, more affectionately referred to as “The Bugs” by all the cool kids, plays from 6 until 9. Great music, great dancing, come on out if you’re still in town by then. And here’s my phone number one more time, in case you might want to contact me, 504-220-2354.
Ahhh… I *love* The Alpine! We go there pretty much every Mardi Gras for dinner (and my brother n his group go when I’m not there for MG) , and I go there whenever I’m in town at least once.
Have a great time while you are in Nola! (I’m positive you will)
B (who is now craving the barbecue shrimp from Alpine)
It was really, really good. I expected good food here in New Orleans, and I haven’t been disappointed at all! And thank you, I have had a wonderful time so far.
OMG, craving Cajun now! Sounds like you’ve gotten off to a kick-ass start!
(When I visit, can we go there?)
Absolutely we can go there! I actually haven’t had what is probably traditional cajun on this trip, but that’s okay. There’s always tomorrow!
