A year in review

Since it’s July, and I had the day off (!!!!) I decided that it was time for the Big Clean. Twice a year I move furniture out of each room, then dust, straighten, clean, vacuum, and wash the floors. (Once every month I merely dust, clean, vacuum and swiffer the floors.) It took me about five hours, which is what I figured it would take. That is total time — which includes breaks, eating lunch, and today, making jerky.

But while I’m waiting for the living room floor to dry, I thought I’d do a look back at
I have several goals for this year. Not necessarily New Year’s resolutions, just things I wanted to do.

Looking back, I’ve done great on almost all of my goals. One of the things that’s really worked for me is my calendar of gold stars. I give myself a gold star (literally, a gold star sticker) every day I meet my three goals:

1. Eat one green veggie
2. Walk for 20 minutes
3. Write for 30 minutes (if I’m doing rewrites) or 500 words (if I’m doing first draft)

(I get a blue, hand-drawn star if I only do two of the three things, like eating a green veggie and walking.)

There are some months where I have fewer stickers, other months where I have more. What it means is that I’m being more consistently healthy. And it shows. I’ve been sick less this year (well, now that the major stressors are out of my life.)

For the most part, I have been cleaning once a month — maybe it gets spread out over a couple of days some months but I’m doing so much better about it than I have been.

I’ve read a few books this year, and I plan on reading a few more. I don’t devour books like I used to — except when those books really catch me (like The City & The City.) Still, I’m happy that I’m reading more.

The one goal that I really haven’t made is doing more household projects. I’ve done a few this year, but I’d really have liked to have done one per month. Obviously, that leaves me room for improvement for the rest of the year. *G*

So how about you? How have you done on your goals for the year? Or have you created new ones?

  1. Actually, I’ve been meaning to check my yearly goals for a while now. Honestly, I’m doing pretty good on them. Have made about half of my stand-alone goals, and have done an adequate amount of work on some of the mutli-stage things (like getting two out of four of my short stories written).

I’ve blown a few of them (getting a final version of my young adult sf book done by WisCon) and, due to some house repairs, some of my financial/vacation goals are in question.

Still, though, pretty good, I think.

    1. I’m glad to hear that you’re doing well with your goals! Of course there are also things I wish I’d finished, but over all, I’m please with the year so far, and I have things to work on for the second half.

  3. hrm. i have areas where i’ve made progress, but i never really sat down and laid out goals, per se. i’m going to think about that, and sketch a few out.

    yay you! *hugs*

    1. I haven’t always sat down and listed out my goals. Since I did this year, it was easy enough to find them and do a comparison. I’m actually surprised and pleased that I’ve stuck to them as much as I have.
