I went with a friend to see the Elton John concert last night. I am a huge EJ fan, and have been for a really long time.
It was so much fun to go to a big live concert like that. I haven’t been to one for ages and ages. We had good seats because I can afford them and because I had a reminder to go and buy them as soon as ticket sales went live.
The concert was held at the Tacoma dome. We went down early to go out to eat. A lot of other people had that same idea. We ended up at our third choice for restaurant. However, it was great food.
I kept looking around thinking, “These are my people!” There were so many fans there in sparkles, boas, wearing big glasses, feathers, spandex, and so on. In addition, as I had expected, the crowd had a wide variety of ages, from the older couple sitting right in front of us to parents who’d brought their kids.
Then we had to find parking near the dome. I had given up hope but Lori hadn’t, and so we ended up parking really close to the dome itself. It was fabulous. We arrived at our seats just a few moments before the concert started.
I was on my feet, singing and dancing and singing along with the songs almost the entire 2.5 hour concert. It was so fabulous. I had such a good time.
EJ is such a performer. Played almost the entire time, with a few short breaks. He had to change jackets, shirts, as well as glasses, so we saw three different outfits.
Out of the six backing musicians, three of them had been with EJ since 1973. Next year, at the end of the tour, they’ll have been playing together for fifty years. They were obviously having such a good time playing music together. It was fun watching them as well.
EJ played a lot more of the older songs than I’d expected. Finally figured out why. He must have the rights back to some of that music, because those old albums are available for sale on his website. Singing those old songs either exposes a new audience to them, or was a reminder to existing fans of the existence of them. It was a smart business move.
The name of the tour is “Farewell Yellow Brick Road.” The last song Elton played was “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” After he finished, he got into a little box that rose up off the stage. The back of the set cracked open, and he vanished inside of it. Then the screens showed him walking away, up a yellow brick road. It was dramatic as hell. Perfect ending to the concert.
This morning, my throat hurts because I was singing and screaming for hours last night. Pretty much everything hurts, quite frankly. It was worth it. So much fun.
I did buy myself some merch. A pair of glasses that light up, because I can’t afford his actual line of eyeglass frames.
Today, I’m writing my blog on my new desk! I’ll post more about that later. In short, I build myself a new sit/stand work desk for TH2 and it’s perfect.
Not writing this morning, beyond this blog post, as I’m just too tired. But tomorrow should be getting back into the new novel and making good progress. As this is book is the second in a series, I already know the world and characters and voices. So far, when I’ve had the time to write, it’s been pretty easy.
Today, I’m not pushing. I’ll get in steps every hour, but I’m not trying for 10K. Tomorrow I can do that again.
How is your Monday going? Is today your day to go like hell, or to coast?
