Good morning!

We spent a lot of time this week and all day on Sunday working on the Tiny Great Hall. The “soft open” is a week from today, and there are so many things to do in the meanwhile!

Last week, we put up recycled hardwood flooring up on the walls as a decorative element. That worked out really well.

The light colored wood is maple. The medium brown is from a left-over project of a friend. The dark brown is the mahogany. The first picture shows both one finished wall as well the second half of that wall that we hadn’t done wood on yet. The second one is using the medium brown wood (which stacks together like Legos) on a different wall.
Pretty wall!
Another pretty wall
Then on Sunday we started tiling the floor. With the help of a friend, we got about 2/3rds finished. On Tuesday, we’ll finish the rest of it.
Partially tiled floor
(For those of you who are on my Patreon, some of this will be a repeat. Apologies, but I’m still pondering this. A lot.)

This last week I went ahead and I took an online assessment of my “strengths” from here:

https://store.gallup.com/c/en-us/1/cliftonstrengths

Becca Syme (https://betterfasteracademy.com) is a writing coach. I’ve been listening to her and reading things by her for a while now, ever since I read her book Dear Writer, Are You Intuitive? (Which I STILL recommend that most writers read, especially intuitive writers.)

Becca and her coaches have taken the test results and the strengths and applied them to writers. (The original test is all geared toward managers and business.)

My top five strengths are: Achiever, Strategic, Relator, Ideation, and Command.

Once I figured out my strengths, I listened to her podcast on each of these strengths: http://betterfasteracademy.com/next-steps-videos

One of the things that taking this test and discovering these strengths taught me was that both Blaze and I have Achiever has a high strength. (Don’t know what his are yet. He has yet to take the test.) And so we’ve been able to talk about that together, how that fits us, and how we’re going to use that going forward.

For example, an achiever doesn’t necessarily celebrate when they finish a novel. I’m too focused on the next project. In addition, I’ve celebrated the entire way while writing the novel, by making my word count every day. That’s my achievement. So I now no longer feel guilty or like I “should” celebrate when I finish. It’s okay that I don’t. I’m not weird or strange—I’m just an achiever, and my goals are different.

The other thing that this self-knowledge has really helped me with is re-framing the relationship I have with my niece. I’m not going to go into details, but in essence, I’ve defined the relationship so that it now aligns better with me and who I am. A lot of the stress that I’ve been feeling regarding this relationship has come internally from me, as well as friction as I tried to do things that aren’t right for me. She won’t necessarily see a difference, but I already feel a great deal better. And quite frankly, that’s better for everyone.

So have you taken this test? What are you strengths?

Cheers!

Leah
