I was in Portland for the week, visiting my niece. It was a better visit than all of the previous visits have been. That’s not to say that there weren’t a few rough patches. But she’s healing, and is doing so much better in terms of her cognition.
It was sunny the day I came back. Where I live is about two weeks behind in terms of the progression of the seasons. It really struck just HOW GREEN everything is up here.
I really love all the different greens that spring in the PNW has. The bright greens of new leaves, the dark greens of the pines. There are so many variations and hues. It’s just beautiful and made me very appreciative of being home.
The quince are blooming at this time. I’m pleased that the flowers weren’t all gone by the time I came home. No idea if the tree will actually fruit this year—really depends on the weather. But I always think that quince blossoms are some of the prettiest around.

It’s about a three hour drive from where I live to my niece’s apartment, depending on traffic. Sometimes it takes longer, but generally, it’s about three hours.
I’ve started listening to podcasts on my drive down and back. I find that very interesting, and I frequently pick up new things to try.
The drive down was Hubberman interviewing a doctor who’s studied ADHD, which is something that my niece has. This way, I’m more informed about her and some of her choices.
One of the big takeaways for me this time was a simple generalization: People without ADHD are consequence driven, while people with ADHD are interest driven.
I’ll do the taxes though I don’t like to do them because of the consequences. Someone with ADHD will procrastinate hard if the taxes don’t interest them.
On the way back, it was another Huberman podcast, an interview where he talked to an expert about movement and training. One of the things I’ve been looking for is some sort of plyometric training, jumping and landing in particular, to increase bone density.
Jumping is difficult for me due to the artificial knee. And though I’ve poked at it, I’ve never found a plyometrics exercise that I wanted to do.
This podcast, the expert talked a lot about skipping. There’s even a video that they took at the track, showing this guy getting Huberman and his producer to skip. (At one point the expert disparaged boxes and using those, instead, urging more skipping.)
Skipping sounded like fun to me. So I tried it.
OMG so much fun! And it’s a good work out. And I’m doing the jumping and landing that I need to improve my bone health. Plus, it’s really easy to incorporate into my regular hourly walks.
As I’ve just started, I don’t know how I’ll feel about skipping later. For now, though, I’m doing shorts bouts 2-3 times a day. And enjoying it immensely.
So how about you? What have you recently added into your routine that brings you joy?

When El the Ice Elf asks Mara the fire elemental to marry her, she expects an immediate YES!

However, a distinct maybe hangs between them.

Not due to a lack of love, but a lack of tradition.

As a fire elemental, Mara is singular. She doesn’t know any other fire elementals. She has no true kin. She does want to get married…but the ceremony has to have meaning for both of them.
El vows to go with Mara to the ends of the world to find rites for Mara to call her own.
