Once more, we chat!

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I’m going to start talking about my books more in the newsletter. Only once a month, generally the last week of the month.

Since I don’t have a new book coming out this month, I’m going to chat about a previously published book. Since I’m currently in the middle of publishing a new science fiction series, I thought I’d talk about my other science fiction series, The Long Run.

As y’all know, I’m a discovery writer. I don’t do much plotting before I start writing. I do, however, frequently do a lot of character and world building beforehand.

That was really true with this series. I started off with what’s known as a five man band. (Literally. Fair warning: TV Tropes might suck you down and you’re about to lose hours diving into rabbit holes. You’ve been warned. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FiveManBand)

One of my favorite TV shows is Leverage (the original series, not the remake). It’s basically con artists taking on corruption and getting vengeance for the little guy.

The short hand that Leverage used for their five man band was Hitter, Hacker, Grifter, Thief, Mastermind.

I built the five main characters in The Long Run using those concepts.

Judit was the mastermind. Note: she also swears. A lot. Both in English as well as Hungarian. She’s in charge of the group, the captain of the ship.

Saxon is a Yeti-like alien who’s the grifter, with the gift of gab.

Menefry is an alien built similar to a scarab beetle, who’s very religious, and also very violent. He plays the part of the hitter.

Kim is a chameleon, literally, and the thief. (If you’ve seen Leverage, you’ll recognize Parker.)

Basil is an inchworm alien and their hacker. Handy when you can just grow the appropriate hands from your center mass.

One of the lovely things about doing a five man band is that you have the pairings that go naturally together, like Judit, the captain of the ship, and Saxon, her second in command. Then, you get to see what happens when you put Judit and Kim together. Or Saxon and Menefry. All the various combinations cause more banter, more teasing, more fun.

I had a few first readers for the first book. They all loved the book, and certainly had their favorite character. None of them had the same favorite character, though, which made me feel as though I’d done my job.

This book is on sale in the Knotted Road Press store for just $0.99.

ION, I’ve been actually finishing what I’m knitting. A few weeks ago (the August 25th newsletter to be precise) I showed a picture of a colorful cardigan that I had just started. I’ve finished it!
Colorful Cardigan
It’s the perfect weight, not too heavy, not too light. My tiny house (for the newbies, Tiny House 2, or TH2) is very warm. Heavy sweaters just won’t do.

Normally, all winter, I’ll wear a T-shirt with a flannel shirt over it. But…I’m kinda tired of the flannel. So I came up with the brilliant idea to knit myself some cardigans. (I hate pullover sweaters. Just doesn’t work for me.)

Back at the start of July I showed y’all the knitting prep I was doing, basically, taking skeins of yarn and turning them into balls. Here’s the cardigan that I made from that yarn. Though I was afraid that it was going to be too heavy, it’s so loose it feels light.
Black Cardigan
Between every sweater I take a break and knit a scarf. I’m doing this one for a friend of mine:

I have a couple of other projects already lined up. But I’m hoping that before the end of next year, I can take a run at this…
