Last night we had thunderstorms. This might not be much of an occasion out where you live, but here in the Seattle area, it’s a Big Deal.
We rarely get thunder and lightning out here. I don’t know why. I’ve lived here for almost twenty years now (wow, that gave me pause) and maybe there have been a dozen thunderstorms that entire time.
But last night? We had it all. Not just the occasional crack of thunder but the rolling kind, that rumbles on and on. Lightning that seemed to be coming down right over the house. Hail. And rain of all varieties, from big fat occasional drops to sheets pouring down.
Went and checked on the fruit in the orchard this morning. Everything survived and stayed on the plant. (I was afraid that the heaviness of the rain might knock some of the fruit off, but it didn’t.)

The grapes are just starting to turn, and the apples look scrumptious.

A few weeks ago we held our annual artists’ colony BBQ. One of the friends I hadn’t seen in a long time asked me if I was still living the dream.
I assured her I was, but it gave me pause, and I’m still thinking about it.
This year has been so rough I’ve lost track of just how lucky, privileged, and blessed I am in my life.
I finished the latest novel on Saturday. Monday, I get to continue working on the new one. I’m not dreading my “work” on Monday. No, I’m really, really excited to start. (The next one is another cozy fantasy, Chocolate Gems, that is being written in the same style as A Dragon’s Guide to Killing Gods, that is, with silly backstory and more serious front story.)
I live in an absolutely beautiful location. I love the woods, the quiet, TH2, my gardens, all of it.
I have the most wonderful supportive spouse in the entire world.
I eat really well. This weekend I grilled not only burgers and steak, but veggies. (OMG I love grilled veggies.)
I have fantastic friends who support me and love me.
I get to spend my days pretty much doing what I want, writing and publishing. Sure, there’s some other stuff, but it’s pretty minor.
On the flip side, my niece continues to have a lot of emotional and physical issues. I will be going down to Portland this week. We now have a friend living with us, staying in TH1, but that’s honestly been a lot less stressful than I’d anticipated. There are tax issues to deal with and that’s going to consume a lot of my work time for the next month. I have health issues.
But over all? I am living the dream.
I’m taking steps to remind myself of that on a regular basis now.

During the month of August, Pacific Force is on sale, but only in the Knotted Road Press store. It's the first of two books, and there will be more!
