Hey there –

It’s a sunny but cold morning here. Frost on the rooftops, as well as on the car windshields. No clouds above, just brilliant blue skies.

Generally, I obey my Tyrant of Motion, AKA my Fitbit, and I try to get up and do 250 steps every fifty minutes. However, there are some days when that doesn’t happen. And no, not just because I’m feeling lazy that day.

When we first got back from Colorado, I was all ready to start walking one morning, after I felt I’d recovered enough.

The Universe, though, had other plans for me.

First, some background.

You may or may not know that the deer in this area tend to give birth to twins in the spring. So, year over year, we see two baby fawns gamboling around the yard.

2025 was slightly different. We had one mama who had two babies (who eventually we were able to figure out were a boy and a girl). But there was also a second mama who had a single fawn. It took us a while to realize that there were actually five deer hanging out on a regular basis.

One of the best things about fawns is that they have constant zoomies. What is the point of merely walking across the yard when you can go bouncing and running everywhere?

Another thing that we delight in is when Mama beds the fawns down somewhere on the property (don’t know where, don’t want to go looking), then comes and sits by herself in the septic field. She needs some “me” time, ya know?

The mama with two fawns allowed them to nurse a little longer than I’ve seen other fawns do so. When they first started to be weaned, and were shifting to eating grass, she wouldn’t allow them to nurse. Later, thought, when they were in the yard and it was safe, she would let them nurse. I don’t have any good pictures, but I saw it twice.

So back to the original thread. I was planning on getting up and walking. However, when there are critters in the yard, I let them have it, and I stay inside.

That Monday when I was going to get in all the walking? I had elk in the septic field and two deer on the slope above my house.

The deer stayed after the elk left. They hung out in the upper meadow. One of them (and I don’t have a good picture of it) laid down with his head on the trail, with a clear view of my front door, so he’d know instantly when I left my house.

Eventually, the deer decided to graze a bit more, and eventually made their way over to my house.

Yeah, absolutely terrified of me and the house. I believe this pair were the male and female fawns of the pair that hung out most of the year.

The elk move through the yard in three different herds. We tend to call them the mowing crew. They, too, came back and hung out some more.

There’s a reason why we have water troughs on the land, that we keep full year-round. I have a heater in the birdbath, so there’s always water available, and yes, the deer and the squirrels drink from that when all the other water in the area is frozen. (The younger deer will drink from the birdbath even when there’s other water available.)

There aren’t any deer or elk hanging out at this time, so I’ll get in some walks today. But if they do show up again, even though it’s nice out, I’ll walk inside. I get to share my property with them, and I’d rather they feel safe using it. I can walk on other days, at other times.

Cheers!
