Hi there!

Welcome to the new people who have just joined the list! I’m glad you’re here.

I’m writing this on Saturday and sending it out on Monday. I have an event on Sunday, and I won’t have the time, energy, or more importantly, focus to write y’all a newsletter on Sunday, my usual newsletter-writing day.

This week has had ups and downs. Thanksgiving was quiet and lovely. I spatchcocked and smoked a turkey. OMG so tasty! We had sweet potatoes as mashed potatoes. I made my usual cranberry-orange relish, which involves a package of fresh, raw cranberries, an orange, and a half cup of sugar. Wash the orange, slice it into chunks and throw it into the food processor. Blend. Then add the cranberries and sugar. Blend some more. Done.

I remember my mother hand-grinding the cranberry-orange every year. She’d get out this huge grinder, use the screw-attachment to adhere it to the cutting board, and grind away.

Blaze made a bunch of things. He made a loaf of bread that he then cut up into chunks and made into stuffing balls. It means that all the servings have lots of crunch edges. So yummy. He also made graham crackers, that he then turned into a graham cracker crust for the French chocolate silk pie.

And he made my mother’s cinnamon rolls, which is a yeasted dough that has to rise twice.

I set up our Christmas tree this afternoon. I was against artificial trees for a number of years. (When I was a kid, my family made it a big outing when we went out into the woods stalking the elusive perfect tree.) But now, the artificial tree brings me a lot of joy. I don’t have to kill a tree, and I don’t have to worry about watering it or taking care of it or the needles that get everywhere.

I actually looked up one of the sets of ornaments that I’ve had since I was a kid. Evidently, the set came out in 1958, and is vaguely famous? Created by Howard Holt. I don’t know. I have a complete set of twelve porcelain figurines that are in mint condition and according to eBay they’re worth some money.

The most important ornaments to me are my wooden angels. My mother and I always got on the bus and went to a shop called The Pretty Package. I got to pick out a new ornament every year, then we went to a restaurant and had lunch together. It was a big deal for me, as we so rarely went out to eat when I was a kid.

Those are the ornaments that always go on the tree first. When I lived someplace that was too small for a tree, I always found a way to hang my angels.

This last week I did more marbled paper. I’ll be chopping these up into bookmarks next week before the big sales event.

I have pictures of every one of the sheets. I’m experimenting with using the pictures I have as the inside of the cover for Custom Dwarven Chocolates. I've been adjusting the brightness of the pictures, playing a bit with the color so they pop more. I really like the idea of having my own marbling as the endpapers of some of my books.

I think that’s it for me this afternoon. I will do my best to do a newsletter next Monday, after the big event, but I’m not making any promises.

Cheers!

Leah
