Hello again lovely people

It’s the last week of the month, which means I’m going to chat about one of the books that I’ve written.

I’m sticking with the science fiction theme, so up this week, The Labors of Darius Linard.

This isn’t a traditional novel, as it’s actually a collection of “short” stories. That’s in quotes because some of these stories are actually novellas.

I didn’t write the first story in this collection first. The first story that I wrote is the story that’s second, The Wild One. I wrote it for the very first issue of Boundary Shock Quarterly (BSQ), the science fiction magazine that my husband publishes.

He asked me to “swing for the fences.” He should have known better.

What I came up with was a pair of symbiotic alien species, both based on birds. One of the species developed hands and lost the ability to fly. The other species were used as transportation.

When they reached the stars, the first species, with the permission of the second species, did some massive genetic manipulation on them, and turned them into starships.

So for Captain’s Log, the story starts out with the captain of the ship sitting on her aerie (nest) on the bridge of her starship, staring down at the rest of her crew.

Really. He should have known better than to ask me to do something different.

At a later date I wrote the first story. I didn’t combine the two timelines until story number three, which I also wrote for BSQ, the issue Grand Theft Starship.

I do have more planned for Darius, and the war. I just haven’t gotten there yet.

In the meanwhile, just for y’all, I have uploaded a companion story that takes place in this same universe. It’s actually the first story I wrote about this war, where the good guys were on the losing side of the war. It’s called Carrion Crow. You can get your free copy here:

ION, I thought I’d share a bit more about the latest event that I did.

First up, do you know what 300 books looks like? I had no idea, myself. But for the coming big holiday event in Enumclaw, I ordered 300 books, 100 each of three different titles. So here they all are!

Quite frankly, the pile is smaller than I had thought it would be. But the printer did an excellent job and I’m so very happy to have them.

Next, I went to an event on Saturday, up at the We Be Book’N bookstore in Monroe. I took about 80 books with me, as well as all the stuff to decorate my table with. Here’s the pile of books and stuff.
All books and stuff for event
Note the contraption on the right. That’s a big-ass cart that folds up that I used for hauling stuff in and out of the store. OMG what a lifesaver for me! It meant I only had to make two trips—one for the table and one for the stuff packed into the cart.

And for proof of visit, here I am at the event. And yes, that is a Las Chicas de Carne shirt that I'm wearing.

Also note the little sausages that I crocheted are hanging from my rail. I pointed them out to people when they came by, calling them “celebratory sausages” as this was the first time I was selling copies of Death by Brisket.

It was an awesome event and I hope to be invited to more at their shop.

That’s it for me for now. What are you up to in the mad rush for the holidays?

Cheers!

Leah

Rosey may, perhaps, be a little upset when the hacker that Jamaal hires steals the alien data core that he was supposed to decode.

Of course, he has a secret lair on a volcano. What super villain wouldn’t?

Breaking into this stronghold is only the start of the “juvenile delinquency” that Rosey and the gang must take on to get it back.

Alien Codex—the second book in the Live Alien Contact series—is full of cons, capers, and misdirection.

Be sure to read the rest of this finished series!
