It’s the last week of the month, so I get to talk about one of the many (many!) books that I’ve written before now.
|

This month, I decided to do something a little different, and talk about one of the non-fiction books that I’ve written. This one really is kind of my favorite, though honestly, I have three that I adore the most.
|

|
I re-read this book this morning, giving it a light editing pass. So if you decide you want to give it a go, the version you pick up from our store has the latest and greatest info in it. (Plus I cleaned up all the links so they go to live places.)

One of my writer friends who’s read this book told me that he was surprised by how honest this book is. Going back through it today, I’m not sure I agree with him. Sure, it’s personal. But it’s the same level of personal that I’ve always had, always been. It isn’t more personal than my other work. It also isn’t less personal.

I put what I call a “check in” at the end of every longer section. Basically, these are the places where you, the reader, need to do the work. I can’t do the work for you.
|
For example, in one section I talk about the fear of success. I know a writer who has family of origin issues when it comes to money. Because of how they were raised, they believe, at a very deep level, that they don’t deserve the money they’re making. They are constantly self-sabotaging their career as a result.
|
So in the check in section, I ask a lot of questions. I don’t have the answers. But you, the artist, need to figure this stuff out.
|
I like this book so much because of those check in sections. Because I don’t have all the answers. All I have are questions that you need to figure out the answers to.
|
I know one artist who was so stuck that she couldn’t finish the book, has never finished the book. She can’t commit to growing as an artist. I wish her the best, but I have also stepped back away from her, because I can’t give her any more help. She has to want it badly enough. And she does not.
|
Being an artist isn’t for the weak of will or heart. You’re standing up against 85% of the rest of the population, marching to your own drummer, out of step and time with the vast majority.
|
And that’s okay. I guess that’s the true message of this book. Don’t worry about what other people think. Go be your own, true, authentic self.
|

This one, I feel, is more personal, as it talks a lot about my own healthy journey to date. I wrote it a few years ago, so it doesn’t contain the most recent health issues, but I feel it’s still valid.
|
|
|
|
|
|
I wrote this for a writer friend of mine who was curious about how I’d managed to shape my writing process as I have over the years. I like this book because I think it might help other writers in figuring out, as well as improving, their own writing process.
|
|
|
|
