Good morning!

Welcome to the new people who have just joined the list! I’m glad you’re here.

Normally, I write my newsletter on Sunday morning and send it out Monday afternoon. However, this weekend I was at a THREE DAY event, so I’m actually writing this Monday morning.

The event was…not what I’d hoped for, to be honest. I lost money on it, which is disappointing.

On the other hand, I didn’t lose a lot of money. And I did have a lot of people sign up for my newsletter, which is always a bonus.

PLUS—we were able to reach new-to-us writers. Invite them to meet with us and the rest of the group down at The Dusty Shelf in Enumclaw. And there were other people who I believed we helped. We did a lot of networking, and there are a couple of artists who I’m looking forward to seeing again. Etc.

So while it wasn’t a dollar-rich event, it was a people-rich event. I am aware that sometimes, I have changed the trajectory of a person’s life. And I might have done that this weekend with a few people.

So again, not a failure when looked at from that perspective. A lesson that cost a little bit of money, a lot of time and energy, but hopefully the connections will make up for that at some point.

The table looked beautiful, at least.

There were a few things that I did for this event that were very smart.

First off, I followed a Wim Hof guided breathing session every morning. I believe this is part of the reason why today, Monday, isn’t too awful. (My husband also volunteered and helped me at the booth more than I asked him too, and that is another reason why I’m not a complete basket case this morning.)

I started doing this type of breathing six months ago or so. When I first started, it wasn’t good. For some reason, though, I stuck with it. I had to do eight or nine sessions before I finally felt better after I finished, and not worse.

Now? Every time I do a session I get this incredible wave of peace that flows over me. Sometimes I feel powerful as well. Even on bad days a session will at least not feel bad, even if I don’t feel great afterward.

Some of the bizarre science that has been done around this type of breathing is rather radical. In a study (sorry, can’t find the link) scientists injected subjects with E. coli. Then, they taught have the subjects a regular meditation, while the other group did the Wim Hof breathing. The scientists measured the subjects reaction to the injection. The bodies of the group that did the Wim Hof had measurably better reactions to the bacteria than the other group.

I know that Wim Hof didn’t invent this method of breathing, that other traditions have other names for it, though I’m not certain that it’s the exact same thing.

For the heck of it, my goal is to do a breathing session every day for the rest of the month, just to see where I am. My Fitbit is already registering more heart-rate variability, which is a good thing. (The rest of my numbers are kind of shit right now, but that’s to be expected.)

Anyway, there were other things that I did, like bring an anti-fatigue mat so I wasn’t standing on hard concrete all day, wearing my crocs while I was there, sitting with my feet up at least once an hour, using Purell on my hands after every transaction, having a fan blowing air on my face the entire time I was there, etc.

I don’t think I’m going to get sick after this event, though I probably shouldn’t say that too loudly. However, I’m feeling pretty good at this point.

Fingers crossed it doesn’t all go downhill from here.

Cheers!
Leah
