Hey there!

As y’all probably already know, I live on 6.5 acres of land, outside of Seattle, near Ravensdale. I have tons of birds who visit my feeders. As well as the asshole Northern Flicker who went away for a while but who came back this week. There were a few days when I didn’t put up the barrier in front of my door. Then he showed up again and I’ve had it up all weekend.

The rabbit population comes and goes. We had a lot of bunnies for a few years, then very few. They appear to be on the increase again.

We frequently see deer and elk. More than one spring we’ve had a mama deer hanging out in our woods with her babies. Coyotes come up from the railroad tracks that run down the hill from us. We’ve even seen a bobcat.

This was the first time I’ve had a raccoon come and visit during the day. This was not a small raccoon. About the size of a small dog. He wasn’t that scared of me when I walked out of TH2, just climbed the tree and then paused. Eventually, he waddled away back up the hill.
Raccoon!
We had a bit of a scare today. My husband keeps all of his writing on SD cards, as well as all of his backups. His thinking is that a computer can go down and take everything with it without any warning. Cards are removable and so your work isn’t lost if the computer fails. In addition, they can be carried with you if something like a house fire happens. (He almost always has those cards on his person.)

This morning, not only had the one card that was the active card—the one he did all his writing on—go bad, the second card, which he used to automatically back everything up to, also went bad.

Fortunately, I was able to plug the cards into my writing computer, then use the automatic system to do a scan and repair. So he didn’t actually lose anything.

I also keep all my writing backed up on a separate thumb drive. I do write directly to the computer and I back up at the end of every single writing session. Then I do occasional secondary backups to a few other places: a dedicated server that we use for backups, an online service, as well as a huge hard drive that I have.

When my latest writing computer was dying, I didn’t have to worry about accidently losing everything. It was all backed up.

The publication computer is a different story. As a result of this happening to my husband I just checked my own backups and realized they were out of date. *le sigh*

So here’s the question for all of you:

How are you backing up your work? (If you aren’t, you need to start. RIGHT NOW.)

Are those backups working? Are they still current?

Make sure that you aren’t just backing up your work. Make sure that you’re ALSO backing up your website. I’ve used UpdraftPlus for years. I’ve also completely backed up a website from an UpdraftPlus backup, so I know that it works.

Losing your hard work sucks. It is worth the time and effort to make sure that doesn’t happen.
