I’m actually writing this on a Monday morning, instead of Sunday. I had events this weekend, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, so I didn’t really have time to write a newsletter.
|
The event on Sunday started out challenging but ended up awesome. It was an outdoor event, put on by the PNW Witches’ Market. The Mabon Festival. People who’ve gone before said that it was easily three times the size it had been.
|
The problem with the setup? It was pouring rain. I got soaked. And I had to be careful with the books. Didn’t want those to get wet. My initial setup was not what I normally do, as I had spaces where drips kept accumulating, primarily from blowing rain.
|
(If I end up doing a lot of outdoor events over the years, I’m going to have to invest in a better pavilion. One where the edges of the attachable sides zip together. Since it’s currently only once or twice a year that I use it, the expense isn’t worth it. Yet.)
|
It stopped raining just before we opened. And the weather cooperated for the rest of the day. A bit on the cool side, but I was prepared for that, wearing winter silks under my clothes.
|
Just as the market was opening, I decided that was going to be non-compliant with my diet, and I bought myself mini-donuts. They were hot from the frier, still warm and fluffy and delicious.
|
However, I distracted the guy filling the bag, and he “accidently” stuffed it to the brim with donuts. (He knew that I was another vendor.) While I could have eaten all of them, that really wouldn’t have been good for me. So I shared them with all my neighbors, who also appreciated a warm, sweet treat.
|
Then, the business that I had my tent in front of complained to the market management that I was blocking customer access. (I wasn’t. The sidewalk was completely clear.) They were unhappy though, that there were tents in the parking lot in front of their store.
|
So I volunteered to move. Right across the lane from where I was set up was an empty spot. Volunteers (and other vendors) helped me pick up my pavilion and move that, then moved tables stacked with books as well as boxes. Took a bit to get resettled, and then the customers started coming.
|
I didn’t sit down a lot. I was talking with customers almost the entire time. I didn’t sell that many copies of my books. I did sell the big ticket items, copies of the marbled and painted books, so I made a (small) profit.
|

While I was at the market, Blaze was at home processing apples. We had a lot of people come out and pick apples. However, that still left us with a lot. Here’s the cart full of what Blaze harvested.

So he spent the weekend making apple leathers, which freeze well:

And apple butter, some of which we’ll be freezing, some of which we’ll be giving away. Along with apple cider, some of which we’ll freeze, some of which Blaze will distill into applejack.
|
|
|
Even after all of that, we still have a LOT of apples left. I figure on Tuesday I’ll make a large batch of apple chutney, some of which we’ll give away, some of which we’ll freeze. I’ll also slice up apples, then dehydrate them, for apple chips.
|
As we won’t get any apples next year, preserving what we can makes sense.
|

And one last picture. I bought a rose this year, one that has an intense “old rose” scent. It produced two roses after I planted it. This is the last rose I’ll get this year. We joke about the rose trying to escape the fence that’s around it to protect it from the critters. I will say, though, that because that one blossom is so high, it’s really easy to smell it. Absolutely divine.
