I was in Las Vegas all week, attending the Author Nation conference. (More on that in a bit.)

While I was gone, I tried to protect my house from the asshole Northern Flicker. I wasn’t necessarily successful.

I don’t mind him hanging out. What I mind is all the bird poop that he produces while he’s hanging out.

So I put up aluminum foil, to try to keep him away. Wasn’t successful, as when I came back, he’d torn up a large part of it so he could have access to his favorite sitting spot on my window.

Put up a bigger piece, trying to keep him off. Did this on Saturday.

This is a picture of it, Sunday morning.

Yes, that’s a large hole.

I’ve replaced the aluminum foil with a cut up paper bag. Hopefully this will keep him off my window sill.

Blaze and I count the Author Nation conference as a big WIN for us.

Did we learn anything earth shattering? Not really. A couple of things are coming in the industry that’s going to make indie writers’ lives easier, but nothing I’m going to announce in public. (Buy me a meal and I’ll gossip some. Not a lot—some of it is private. But a little…)

No, the reason we count this conference as a WIN was because we got to talk with other authors. Younger authors, at least in terms of their writing careers.

And we got to make an impact on their lives and their trajectory. We got to help them move along the path, giving them a better chance at winning.

And this is really what it’s all about for us.

Did I meet some cool people who I hope to stay in touch with? I did! I hope that I was able to start the process of making friends with some of these other writers. Starting our own network of goofballs.

I also feel as though I was able to validate some of these writers, that there is no One True Path to the Mountain we call publishing. There are many paths, and it’s okay if you’re striking out on your own.

We flew home (late) from the conference Friday night. Saturday night was the Enumclaw wine walk. We sold books in the book store while people traipsed through, on their way to get their wine. It was awesome.

And again, got to talk with writers and invite them to the First Tuesday meeting that we do in Enumclaw every month.

However, I am also well aware that there is a price that I’m paying for all of this. Namely, I won’t have the energy to write for a couple of days. That’s okay. I knew this going in, and I have book editing planned. So I’ll still be moving the needle forward. Just slowly.

Did you have a WIN this week? Tell me about it! I love hearing from you, and I try to reply to every email.

Cheers!

Leah
Hey! It's November! Ice & Berries is coming out THIS WEEK. If you get it from the KRP store, it's available NOW. Everywhere else, it won't come out until November 21st. So get yours today!

Here's the blurb:
A cozy fantasy tale of friendship, work, and going out into the world. Oh, and snow cones!

When the Ice Elf Elbriarien Itamar—or just El, for short—fails to get her Mage Mark after her apprenticeship, she decides to leave the frozen north and head south.

Someplace where snow doesn't stay piled up in corners during the heat of summer. Maybe walk barefoot in the sand next to the ocean. Perhaps even chuck out all her learning and take work in a bar. (A fate worse than death, at least according to her parents.)

However, without her Mage Mark, El cannot legally practice spells or do complicated magic. Just little things, cantrips native to her Ice Elf heritage.

Join her as she makes her way in a new life and a new city, finding friends, business opportunities, a love of snow cones, and perhaps, if she's lucky, a sapphic love as well.

To celebrate the publication of my new cozy fantasy novel, my first cozy fantasy novel is now on sale for $0.99!

About the book:
The spell to transform Killian the champion fails. Instead of a worm, he’s transformed into a wyrm. Swell. Now what? Thus begins the story of Talon the dragon and his eventual battle with a god. Or something like that. It’s a lovely cozy fantasy filled with humor, found family, gods and myths, and breaking of the fourth wall.
