Hello!

It’s a beautiful day outside today, which is nice after we had rain most of the week.

Some time ago, I posted about the cherry trees, and how they were fruiting this year. The weather stayed nice for long enough, and so we actually have cherries!

LOTS of them.

Blaze planted these trees fifteen years ago or so. This is the first year that not only have they really been mature enough, we’ve also finally had the right weather for them.

We have many different types of cherries. Two of the trees are coral champagne, so they don’t get really bright red, but instead, are both yellow and red combined.

The other tree is a graft, with four different types of cherries on it. They’re all different shades of red, but to me, I don’t taste a lot of difference between them.

The other thing that bloomed this week was the second flower on the cactus. Not only that, but I caught a good closeup of the flower. It’s like it has a flower within the flower!
As for writing, I’m alternating between developing the class on writing cozy fantasy that I’m giving at Worldcon and the novel. Both are humming along nicely. Somedays I have more energy, and so can work on the novel. Other days are lower energy, so I do other things.

One of the most important things that I’ve learned to do over the years is when my health isn’t perfect, I have to ask myself what can I do? I must focus my attention on solutions and not problems. There is generally something related to the writing or the business that I can do that day.

So today, I write a newsletter and I do edits on a novel. Hopefully tomorrow I can get back to actually writing a novel.

I’m currently reading a fantasy mystery. It’s a Holmes/Watson pastiche, set in a high fantasy world with great world building and some interesting magic. (I’m actually about halfway through the second in the series. Here’s a link to the first book, The Tainted Cup: https://amzn.to/4esSHvI)

I’ve been doing a lot of cozy paranormal mystery, but I’ve never done a straight up fantasy mystery. I’ve been thinking a lot about how I would do such a thing.

Now, the series I’m reading is not cozy. Not in the least. There’s a grotesque edge to the magic as well as just the lives of the people in general. And they’re a little dark as well.

I’m in a stable enough place again that I can consider writing something darker. So I’m poking at this idea, have started a notes file on my phone, and we’ll see what I can come up with.

Of course, the most exciting thing for me is that it’s set in this foreign empire that has many different lands, which means many different magic systems. Because that’s honestly one of the things that I adore doing the most, coming up with new systems of magic, things that I’ve never done before.

Cheers!

Leah
