Hello all—

I’m trying something new with the newsletter. Basically, once a month, I’m going to explicitly tell you about a book that I’ve written. The rest of the time, it will be the usual chatter.

According to my email program, about half of you open this newsletter, which everyone tells me is amazing. However, very few of you buy my books.

So I’m going to tell you about my books on the regular, in the hopes that more people will buy them!

This month, it’s my latest novel that’s just become available generally August 21st: Alien Wreck.

I did a little bit of planning for this book as well as the series. Not a lot, as per usual.

I gave all of the main characters a “companion” as it were, because while I was planning on a lot more action and tension, I also wanted every character to have someone to banter with.

That was when Dennis, the AI for the ship The Roadrunner, was born.

Dennis is so very much the hero of his own story. However, when I was originally planning this series, I hadn’t planned on giving Dennis any scenes that were from his point of view.

He’s a computer. He’s kind of stuck. There can’t be any real emotional growth. Right?

Wrong.

He does change. And his importance to everyone around him grows (if perhaps only in his own mind). His role truly changed in terms of the story. This is one of those times when the character showed up and demanded more space than I’d originally allotted him.

All four books in the series are finished and available for pre-order both on the Knotted Road Press store as well as Amazon. Books 1 & 2 are available everywhere, and book 3 will be available everywhere by the end of this week.

ION, I’m still recovering from the con crud I picked up at Worldcon. I honestly thought I’d be completely well by now. However, this cold continues to linger. I’m mostly well? Just not one-hundred percent.

Makes me just want to sit and knit.

So I’ve started a new cardigan this week. I’m using scrap yarn, trying to knit up extras of stuff that I have. The first pieces are a variegated yarn, and then I’m adding in other variegated yarns. It’s going quickly because I’m not interested in complicated patterns at this point.

At some point, I will do a complicated pattern again. I’m actually planning on it, maybe three to four sweaters from now. WAY back in the 1990s, I bought amazing, handspun yarn from Hungary. The yarn makes my finger feel good whenever I knit with it, because the wool still has so much lanolin in it.

I started a sweater with it years ago. I eventually realized I’d never finish that piece, so I pulled it apart. I’m so much better about finishing sweaters that I don’t have to sew together.

I have found a pretty pattern that I think I’ll use with that yarn, that’s knit all in one piece. The finished product looks a lot more complicated than the pattern actually is, at least from my casual reading of it. So we’ll see.

Anyway, here’s a picture of the current WIP. It’s got raglan sleeves. Basically, knit the yoke to a certain point, put some of the stitched on a holder, then continue knitting the body as one piece down to the bottom of the sweater. Then go back and knit in the sleeves. In this picture, I’m working on the body part.

And I think that’s it for me today. Please think about buying books, if not from me than from some other author.

Cheers!

Leah
