Happy spring!

Yes, I know. I keep talking about spring as it’s occurring around here. But while there’s been some rainy days, for the next few days, it’s going to be glorious—cool at night, sunny and warm the rest of the time.

The cherry trees in our orchard all bloomed in anticipation of this. We have three of them. Two are champaign cherries, so the berries aren’t red but more of a golden color. The other is a graft tree, with all sorts of different flavors of cherries on the different branches.

Every year, we have to put ant killer down around the base of the trees. Otherwise, ants will crawl up and make nests among the leaves. If we let them do that, the trees would die, eventually. So as soon as it warms up today, I’ll sprinkle the ant killer all around the base of all the trees, so they have a chance to live.

Will we get cherries this year? Who knows? It really depends on how warm the weather is from this point onward. If we have a warm April but then a rainy cold May, we might not get any fruit. If it stays warm for a while, and we have a mild May, we will have fruit.

Fortunately, we don’t rely on the fruit for our income. Then again, if we were growing cherries for profit we wouldn’t live here, but east of the mountains.
Cherry trees in bloom
I’m kinda, sorta, in between writing projects right now. I finished the latest novel, the last in the Alien Live Contact series, and haven’t started the next novel yet. I still have another short story to write before I do.

What I did do this weekend was to read through the first of the Cultivator College books that I wrote in 2023. It’s 92K words long and has a huge cast of POV characters.

So even though it’s going to take me three months to write the next one, that was what writer brain decided that she really wanted to do.

The book has some serious stuff in it, but it also has a lot of things that make me giggle. A lot.

When I wrote the first book, I ended up doing it in three chunks. I plotted out part one (as much as I ever do), wrote that, then ended up pausing for a couple of days while I plotted out part two. Except that writer brain had been lying to me at the time, and so I only thought that there were two parts.

It wasn’t until I was near the end of the second part that I realized there was a third part. So I paused for a couple of days, figured that out, then wrote the last 30K.

I’m going into this assuming that it’s going to have roughly the same structure: the first third or so being the equivalent of summer vacation, then the last two thirds back in the grind of school.

I’m treating this like a YA trilogy, even though it really isn’t. The main character knows who she is and what she’s capable of. However, she is a complete fish out of water in terms of the setting because she’s never cultivated before.

So the first answers the question, “Who am I?” The second needs to answer, “Why am I here?” The third will be all about “What is my purpose?” While the fourth is a bit different, basically, “Oh shit, there’s a war! And I’m fighting in it!”

At this time I’m assuming that there are only four books in the series. I could be wrong, though, and it’s possible that it’s a double trilogy. We’ll see.

I plan on publishing book one early next year. The plan is to space them out, one book per year. Fingers crossed writer brain will let that happen.

I hope you’re enjoying the weather where ever you are. Feel free to reply and tell me about it!

Cheers!

Leah

Cover for Witch Mirror?
AJ's latest vision starts with a dozen people being yanked out of sight by a noose around their neck. It ends with just a single body, hanging from a beam in an open loft.

What the heck? Did she just witness the work of a serial killer? Or a cult?

The victim turns out to be more nefarious: a Catfisher, that is, someone who impersonates other people on the internet for attention and possibly money.

The reality TV show that exposes catfish turns their attention to AJ. As a successful psychic, she must be a fraud. Right?

Between being pushed for information by one of the show’s host, the machinations of her mother on the Milltown chamber of commerce, and trying to keep her relationship with Roland moving along, AJ has her hands full.

Particularly when a second, only somewhat reformed catfish comes to her for help after being threatened...

Witch Mirror?— a cozy paranormal woman’s mystery—continues the adventures of AJ, the quirky characters of the charming Pacific Northwest burg of Milltown, and leaves AJ with questions about magical powers and her path forward, with her family, friends, and lover.

Let the water—and the magic—flow.
