I’m currently sick with a sinus infection. While I’m unhappy that I’m still sick, I’m still kind of okay with it.

Let me give you some of my history with sinus infections.

Back in April of 2004, I came down with a sinus infection. Because I don’t present like a normal person when it comes to sinus infections, I was misdiagnosed. It wasn’t until I went to a nurse practitioner that one of my friends recommended that I finally got an accurate diagnosis. However, that also didn’t occur until the end of October. So I had that sinus infection for six months.

What happens when I get a sinus infection? I have some congestion, but the main symptom is a horrible sore throat and no voice. The laryngitis is caused by post-nasal drip. I’ll get better on my own, I’ll recover my voice and I’ll be “well” for a while, though I’ll still be tired and lacking in brain. Then I’ll wake up some morning and my voice will be gone again. This cycle repeats every five to fourteen days, until I finally catch a clue that I have a sinus infection. Again.

From 2005 until 2009, I was highly susceptible to sinus infections. I had between four to six per year. I had an agreement with my doctor toward the end of that time. All I had to do was to send him an email and he’d send in a prescription for antibiotics for me. Didn’t need to make an appointment or go see him.

I did see an ENT specialist. That was when I discovered that I’d inherited my father’s teeny-tiny sinus passages. In addition, because I was flying a lot for my day job, I’d also scarred those passages, which made them even smaller.

However, in 2009, I changed my diet, basically eliminating all grain and sugar. That diminished the systemic inflammation I’d been unaware of but dealing with. In 2009, after I changed my diet, I had one more sinus infection. I think that made a total of three for that year.

From 2010 until now, 2025, I’ve had a grand total of three sinus infections, this one being my third.

This is why I’m not too upset by the current sinus infection. I figure three sinus infections over fifteen years isn’t too bad, particularly when I’m so prone to them.

This is also why normally, at the first sign of any sort of illness, I take my good zinc tablets. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BKURF1A) I understand that not every BODY responds well to zinc. For me, these tablets dry me out completely. It means I’ll have a cold with no sinus issues, just feeling lousy for a few days. I didn’t do that this time, and I’m suffering as a result. I need to remember to always take my zinc at the first sign of congestion.

How about you? Do you have a special treatment that reduces cold symptoms? Or sinus infections?
