As y’all may or may not recall, I’m part of a story bundle right now. The Magic, Monsters, and Myths story bundle, to be precise.
If you’ve read any of my books, you know that I love magic. And monsters. As well as myths.
A story bundle that has all three? Awesome! If I wasn’t in this bundle, I’d be all over it, buying this bundle up in a heartbeat.
So, it shouldn’t surprise you that I’m actually “double dipping” as it were in this bundle. I have a novel in this bundle (“Circle of Air”, the first of the completed four book series called The Witch’s Progress. Urban fantasy set in Portland.)
I also, however, also have a short story in the Uncollected Anthology that’s included in this bundle, Issue 21, “Deities.”
Uncollected Anthology is currently in its sixth (SIXTH!) year. It’s a collection of fantasy writers who each write a short story to a pre-selected theme and put out an anthology once every three months.
Originally, we were all putting out our stories individually, hence the “Uncollected” part of the name. However, the technology has changed, and we can (and do!) now bundle then all together and offer them as a single entity.
The short story I have in this issue is called, “With a Little Help From the Gods.” Here’s the first line of the story:
Ever since Bernadette’s younger brother Clarence had transformed himself into a bird god, she’d kept the kitchen window open for him, in case he stopped by.
As you can tell, this takes place in a world that’s a little skewed from our everyday one.
However, this isn’t the first time that I’ve written short stories in this world. This is actually the sixth story.
The first one, “The Midnight Gardener” is actually one of my favorite stories of all time. Here’s the first line of that story:
Joanie found her heart out in the backyard, hanging in an old fir like a Christmas ornament, covered in bees.
As I said, it’s a really different world. One where strange magic appears everyday.
