…is the one you’ll do.
I already knew this. It just really came home to me again this week.
For the past six months or so, I’ve been using the 1-on-1 coaching from Nerd Fitness.
Before I get any further, let me just say this: I *love* Nerd Fitness. I think this is one of the best exercise/fitness/better yourself sites out there. I’ve been a Nerd Fitness fan for eight to nine years now. I would recommend them. Go check them out at NerdFitness DOT com.
Anyway – despite how much I love them, I have not loved the 1-on-1 coaching. I still think it’s a great program and I would recommend it, with caveats. However, I also have figured out that the program isn’t for me.
How I was using the program: I had the coaches come up with a bodyweight program that I would do every other day, while I did my regular yoga on the other days.
There are a lot of people who use the coaches for doing gym workouts, for meal/nutrition advice, and other things. Again, I think this program is excellent.
I left the program for two primary reasons.
One – I wasn’t using it right. I had thought that doing a bodyweight workout every other day in addition to the yoga would be a workable routine for me. It turned out not to be.
The best exercise is the one you’ll do.
I love doing my yoga routine. I hadn’t realized until this morning how much I resented not being able to do it every day. While I liked the bodyweight workouts, replacing my yoga with them was a mistake.
If I wanted to try this program again, I would have to dedicate time to a completely separate workout that Nerd Fitness would provide for me.
Two – I am self-motivated. Self-directed. External deadlines don’t do it for me. When I had a day job, I worked from home. For 14 years. I never needed the discipline of going into an office in order to get my day job done. Plus, I was frequently told by my bosses that they were astonished by the amount of work I accomplished. Without their guidance or interference.
My husband and I joke that I am completely un-employable at this point. I do not respond well to someone telling me what to do.
For the Nerd Fitness coaching, I had to report into the app what I did every single day.
I *hated* that part of it. Really resented it. I do not need that accountability. I understand other people do. Not me.
If I ever tried a program like this again, I’d have to figure out a completely different way of tracking and sharing what I accomplished without making it feel like work, or reminding me of the day job.
So again – I think Nerd Fitness is great. I would strongly recommend the site, the academy, everything they offer. I would also recommend the 1-on-1 coaching, with the caveat that if you’re self-directed, you may have to figure out how to work around the reporting in expectations. For me, it turned out to not be the right thing.
What is the exercise that you’ll do everyday? That might not feel like exercise?
