Day by day

I have a rock that sits on my bedside table. One side says, “WRITE!!!!” The other side says, “Savor the stream of life.”

Right now, I’m mainly doing the latter. I’m spending a lot of time going out, experiencing New Orleans. I’ll write today, and maybe a couple of days next week. But I’m also going out to listen to music, dance, and play.

Savor.

I have an itching need to write. Every time I sit down to do it I get a complete rush. I feel full to brimming with Story.

But I’m still taking more in. I have so little time left here. I have a feeling I may “hermit” for a while when I get back to Seattle, spend a few weeks processing all that I’ve experienced. Write and write and write.

Today, though, it’s time to go to a jazz brunch with friends. Savor more food, friendship, and music.

I hope ya’ll are finding the right balance for yourselves.

I hadn’t planned on taking such a long break from the novel. I took a week off from the day job for Mardi Gras. I actually thought I’d get some writing done.

Only not so much. (I did have a WONDERFUL Mardi Gras, however.)

I only finished typing up the first two chapters yesterday. They’re shorter than I realized — I wrote a lot, but I also crossed out a lot. Today I start chapter three.

I will not finish this novel before I leave NOLA. I think I’m okay with that. It’s more important that I experience things here than be on a schedule. Time enough for a schedule when I move back to Seattle.

Note to self:

You know that timer you have on your computer? That says stop working after 55 minutes and take a five minute break?

EVERY TIME IT GOES OFF TOMORROW, you are taking a break.

I know, I know, you’ve been using it for standing up, so you aren’t risking your health by sitting on your ass around the clock. But just because you’ve just finished a 30 minute phone meeting where you paced the entire time DOES NOT MEAN you’ve taken a break.

Seriously.

If you don’t take these breaks, you end up like you are now, cranky and tired and not wanting to write because you worked seven hours straight with one ten-minute break for the entire day.

Just saying.
